Whistler welcomes Pemberton in first games of the season

The Whistler Youth Soccer Club welcomed their “friendly rivals” to the north this past Saturday (1 Oct) in what was the first game of the season for many young players.

Members of the Pemberton Youth Soccer Association hit the fields at Myrtle Philip Community School for the first showdown between the two sides this season.

For some of the U8 boys and girls, it was their first game ever, as evidenced by the excited giggling at the outset. When the whistle blew, however, it was game on and all the lessons of the past few years kicked in — there was passing, scoring and general camaraderie on and off the field.

In the U10 division, roughly 100 boys and girls from Whistler and Pemberton kicked off the first of their friendly inter-club matches.

It’s a good opportunity for match-play, says Whistler’s Head Coach Mark Freeman. There is no score-keeping and the sides may not be even every time but the name of the game is all about the kids being out on the field and playing.

“As you as you have an opposing team and a referee, the game becomes serious,” he adds, pointing to the looks of concentration on the field in the young players.

But, particularly with the Pemberton teams, the idea is to keep the matches light and friendly. These players and coaches, after all, will come together in a few years when the teams combine at the U13 level and become a Sea to Sky team.

It was great to see the kids in match-play as the season hits the midway point for outdoor play.

“Due to the facilities, we have a very short window to be able to play these sorts of games,” adds Freeman.

The players will all meet again for the Fall Jamboree in Pemberton on Sunday Oct. 16.
